25% of Indonesian Women Have No Planning to Give Birth Normal

According to the Alodokter survey, 75% of pregnant women in Indonesia plan to give birth normally. Only 4% choose cesarean section and the remaining 21% haven't decided yet. If you are still confused about wanting to give birth normally or not, the following points can be taken into consideration. Of the 830 pregnant women who took part in the survey from Alodokter, 623 of them chose to give birth normally. Only 33 people planned to give birth by cesarean section. While the remaining 174 people (21%) still have not determined the method of delivery to be chosen.

Normal childbirth

From the results of the survey it can be concluded that normal childbirth is still the number one method of birth choice for pregnant women in Indonesia. When compared to caesarean section, the normal delivery process is indeed simpler, cheaper, and does not require complicated tools to help the baby get out of the womb. Therefore, in addition to being a popular choice for pregnant women, health experts also highly recommend normal delivery. Normal delivery can usually be done if the pregnant woman shows the following signs:
  • The contractions are not too painful and the opening has reached 10 cm, so it is wide enough for the baby to come out of the mother's womb.
  • The mother is strong in pushing or pushing the baby until birth.
  • The mother's condition makes it possible to push the placenta out, within 1 hour after the baby is born.
In fact, not all pregnant women can give birth normally. There are certain conditions that make labor have to be done by other means. Especially if these conditions risk the health or safety of the mother, baby, or even both. Here are some conditions that make pregnant women recommended not to give birth normally:
  • Complete placenta previa, a condition in which the baby's placenta fully covers the mother's cervix.
  • Pregnant women have the herpes virus with active lesions.
  • Pregnant women are infected with the HIV virus but do not seek treatment.
  • Pregnant women have given birth by cesarean section before.
  • Pregnant women have had operations on the uterus before.
If a pregnant woman experiences any of the above conditions, then the doctor will usually recommend delivery by cesarean section.

Caesarean section

In labor by cesarean section, the doctor will give an incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus. Cesarean delivery is usually done to save the mother and baby if:
  • Pregnant women have been given induction but there is no progress in labor.
  • Containing twins.
  • The position of the baby's head is not in the way out of the uterus (breech or cross).
  • Mother's pelvis is narrow.
  • Baby wrapped around the umbilical cord.
  • The baby's heartbeat is abnormal.
  • Problematic placenta.
  • Baby size is too big.
  • Pregnant women suffer from certain diseases, such as herpes, HIV, diabetes, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia.
Apart from medical problems, a caesarean section can also be done based on the wishes of the pregnant woman herself. Usually this is done if a pregnant woman wants her child to be born on a certain day or date, for example on the Republic of Indonesia's Independence Day or on a "beautiful date". In addition, cesarean delivery also provides its own benefits, namely pregnant women do not need to feel pain due to contractions or worry about the area of the perineum (the area between the vagina and buttocks) torn. And who said that if you give birth by cesarean section, you cannot give birth normally? Pregnant women can give birth normally after giving birth by cesarean section, depending on the type of incision and the number of previous cesarean births, the condition of the mother during labor, the size and position of the baby, and the availability of adequate facilities. What is clear, discuss in advance to the obstetrician. However, just like other surgical procedures, giving birth by cesarean section also has a risk for complications, such as infection and bleeding. Whereas in infants, when compared to babies born normally, babies born by cesarean section have a slightly higher risk of experiencing respiratory problems. In determining the choice of delivery method, or to discuss the delivery method that you have chosen, it is recommended to always consult an obstetrician first. In addition, do not forget to be diligent in checking the condition of the womb so that you and your child stay healthy during pregnancy, until the birth process arrives.
